Navimatics Interview

By Interviewer at 06/11/08 14:48

Name of your website?

Navimatics

Your name?

Bill Zissimopoulos

Your Location (city, etc)

Seattle

Please give us a short summary of your website?

Navimatics sells quality marine maps for Garmin GPS devices.

What inspired you to launch your own website?

The unavailability of good and cheap marine maps for Garmin GPS devices. BlueCharts can be too expensive, especially if you sail or boat in different areas and need regular updates.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

My first personal website was back in London in 1995. It was a student web site.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

That was a hard decision. After listing several names we arrived at navimatics as a play of the words "navigation" and "telematics".

What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?

We are the only ones who offer any kind of alternative to BlueChart maps. Our maps are based on NOOA charts and we are planning to update them frequently, possibly once a month. We are also planning to provide regular updates through a subscription model in the future; no one else offers a regular update consumer solution for marine navigation currently!

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

Our goal is to use our website to promote our products and company. We have big plans for the future and we intend to keep adding products and services and making our website more useful to mariners.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

Too early to tell. We just incorporated and launched our website.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

We would probably add online maps (development is currently underway). But we would probably use most of the budget to develop new products and services for marine and aviation navigation.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

Currently our hosting environment is small, but we understand the web and the Internet enough to keep up with demand.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My personal biggest challenge is going into business on my own. When you no longer draw a paycheck, stress has a way of getting to you.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Again too early to tell. Maybe yours? :)

What is your website address?

Navimatics
