Please give us a short summary of your website?
The Alan Hovhaness International Research Centre, currently being built in Yerevan. Will house the world's most extensive collection of Armenian composer Alan Hovhaness research materials. Located in the Charents Museum of Literature and Art on Republic Square.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
To bring the music and ideals of Alan Hovhaness to the world.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
We started this website just a few months ago for the Hovhaness Centre. It is the first website for the Centre.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Of course we named it after Armenian composer Alan Hovhaness, in order to honour him.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
This is the only official website of the Alan Hovhaness International Research Centre and is devoted to Alan Hovhaness, and uniquely to the Armenian culture which he embraced in his music.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
To help bring the very great Armenian culture to the world.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
We have already collected some 2,500 individual letters, articles, photographs, videos, compact discs, LP recordings, critiques, concert programmes, posters, reminiscences, interviews, etc. We just had a Steinway concert grand piano donated to us (valued at $58,000.00) by a generous benefactor in the United States.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
Hire a professional web designer. We have built this site using templates, and only a microscopic knowledge of HTML code. We are all volunteer workers taking no pay.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes, we are completely dedicated to this project.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
We have fairly anticipated the costs and expenses-we are constantly raising funds for the construction of the Hovhaness Centre, have had generous donations from benefactors and philanthropists, and are presently pursuing more funds. Fund-raising is a full-time job, but we do it happily knowing what our results can be.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Continual fund-raising, finishing construction within our budget and time frame to avoid long-term inflation.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Writing to organisations like yours.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Actually it has met our expectations. Lots of rewarding work.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
It has been up several months, is constantly growing, and it will stay permanently.
Why do you have an Alan Hovhaness International Research Centre in Yerevan?
To help bring international attention to the great Armenian composer Alan Hovhaness and to the very great Armenian culture which he embraced.
