Please give us a short summary of your website?
This is a Christian church directory site to help unknown Christian church websites become indexed in Google and yahoo. The directory was made as a helpful tool so when people search for a church or topic they will actually find the churches website.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
Some churches I am familiar with had been on the internet for several years and were not even showing up on Google or yahoo even when typing in their url address. I felt the need to do something about this and so the Church Directory was created.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
The first website I ever launched was in 2004 and dealt with energy and had several pages and a blog to go along with it. This website attracts energy customers in the natural gas and electricity sectors who are working towards finding an affordable solution to their energy needs.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
The name for my website was decided based upon the city and state where I am from and the subject, "churches" I was making the directory for.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
This Church Directory is branded the very name of the town I am from and has many details related to this town. Since I am very familiar with the city I am able to add niche details to the site a big company might skip over. Having good familiarity with the topic and keywords as found in the website name I can create a quality site with relevant content based on those website key terms.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
I would like to keep it online as long as possible and have no desire to sell it unless someone wanted let's say $1,000,000 for it.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
I believe the more time and money I invest in it that the quality of the site will eventually pay for itself. "Anything worth doing is worth doing well."
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would add quite a few widgets that other website owners can put on their sites that will help people find churches in their areas.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I believe so. I am on a very large hosting provider and I already have quite a bit of infrastructure in place. We can also hire more people if we need to when and if the need arises.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
The main unexpected cost has been the cost in my time. The main headache has been trying to work out programming bugs.
What has been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge has been dealing with making the site come up in the top of the search order for certain key terms.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Placing the site in web directories has really helped in promoting the site.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
My expectations pictured everything working the first time but realistically I have had to redo the same issues over and over again sometimes.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
I have been running the site about 2 years now and plan to keep it regardless of gains in traffic or popularity.
What developmental aspect of the site do you enjoy the most?
I like the graphic arts part of the development process. Coming up with new and unique eye appealing designs is fun and keeps me interested in the overall project.
