What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?
There is a lot of competition out there, getting our piece of the pie has been and continues to be a struggle. It's hard to get page rank on a tight budget, even with the blog, the lens, the linking, the SEO submissions, and at least 2 hours a day spent on the above, I still can't get ranked. The steps are mind boggling, time consuming and frustrating.
What has been the easist part of operating your website?
The easy part is maintaining the site, even though when you are in business for yourself it is hard to get feedback.
What was your biggest mistake?
We've made our share of mistakes, especially in the beginning, not understanding how it all fits together, but the biggest was when we choose the wrong merchant to run our ecommerce.
Who maintains your website and why?
We maintain our website ourselves, it's one of those, it's easier to do it yourself that to spend the time thinking it up and then passing it on and then reviewing, and then edits, blah, blah, blah. It's just easier to do it yourself.
Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?
Since we do not have a physical store location, our customers have somewhere to buy our products, without waiting for our next local event.
What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?
My outlook is good. With companies like paypal making life easy for the owner and the consumer, I feel like we can still look forward to security on line. The future of the internet can only get better, with people's busy schedules these days, online shopping and information at hand helps us to save our precious hours for the things we really like to do with our time. Now if the USPS would stop raising shipping rates, maybe we can stay afloat in future sales.
What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Ugh. It can be overwhelming. Being a person that has never failed or quit anything in my life, I keep keepin' on. But, not without frustration. There is always a road block of some kind, another step, another submission, another link, another something. For example, what I am doing right now! Could my time be better spent somewhere else? But if I don't do this am I passing up an opportunity to get my name out there? Am I just going to end up getting emails trying to sell me a website ecommerce, SEO submission or something else, or do I really think this is going to do me some good!
What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?
They certainly haven't hurt, but right now they are not helping me.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Word of mouth.
What method has been least successful for promoting your website?
Honestly, I really can't say. My rankings have gone up on some, at least I show up now. Alexa is a little scary.
What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?
Nothing really. There has to be a system and the way it is, is probably as good as it could ever be. Look, it's like the phone book. The more business' there are in the yellow pages the less chance you have of getting that call. You have to have the bigger ads, the TV commercials, the radio spots, etc. to be the big boys. And the big boys have money to do it. It does mean their product or service is any better than mom and pop, just more branded. The system on the internet is the same, the people that can afford to pay for all the advertising are the ones with the page rank and therefore the business. The small business has to spend twice as much time and effort to get there. If you know of a faster way on a $0 budget let me know.
