Name of your website?soyrex: Design and Development
Your name?
Alex Holt
Your Location (city, etc)
Barcelona
Please give us a short summary of your website?
It's really just an online portfolio of my work as a designer and developer.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
Well, in this business (making websites)... it's really necessary. However also because i wanted a CV online that would allow me to send out my web address without having to provided printed or PDF based CVs to potential employers or clients.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
Many years ago.. this has been my area of expertise for more than 10 years. But i suppose my first website was back when i was in early high school.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
soy rex is spanish for I am Rex... which is a name that friends used to use for me. It is a play on mistaken japanese pronounciation of my name (Alex.. Arex).
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
I work across Design, Development and Programming which is quite rare in this industry. You meet designers who dabble in programming and programmers who try to design.. but people who can claim proficiency in both are quite rare (in my experience).
Does having an online portfolio like this actually help you win work?
This is an interesting question. The short answer is no, not really. However it does help minimise the effort i have to make to win freelance work or support proposals.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I imagine so. However, since the site is more of an online portfolio and catalogue, it is not a high demand web site to maintain - it's also unlikely to become REALLY big.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
In it's current incarnation? Since arriving in Barcelona, around 2 years ago. To be honest, i NEED to have a website like this, so I imagine that i will keep it up irresepective of profit or popularity - at least until I change industries.
