I started in 2004, to make money.
Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc
Villa Orleans is a vacation rental on the beach. It has the romance of being in the tropics, and that's part of what I sell.
What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?
Learning how to promote my site and to code it. You can't just put up a site without studying your competition. I'm looked up the code on all of my closet competitor's sites, and Googled their site names, and found where they are listed, and how they got there. I'm ranked high in my keywords. The only thing I have not been able to do is list in Dmoz. In the section where my website should be listed, I am ignored, when there are other sites that are listed that have gone out of business.
What has been the easist part of operating your website?
Depositing money I make from it.
What was your biggest mistake?
Not listening to people in the industry who recommended what I am doing now.
Who maintains your website and why?
I maintain my web site, because 1: I like to; 2: I'm hungry and no one that I know can do it better than me.
Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?
99% of my guests are from the states, who would not have seen my site, if it was not on the net.
What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?
Ecommerce is the present and the future. There's money to be made on the net, but you gotto find your nitch, and do it well.
What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
It's a game to fine tune your website so it appears high. I don't know it all, and I am always tinkering with my website, learning new code, and reading how others do it.
What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?
My tinkering with my website has enabled me to appear high and to sell my product.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Listing in as many places as possible.
What method has been least successful for promoting your website?
Expecting people to visit website, when I don't promote it. Website is only half the work.
What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?
Nothing at the moment.
Why can't you get in Dmoz?
I have no idea. I've applied to become an editor in my area, and I'm ignored as well. I wish I could find the human editor of my area and tell him he can kiss my white a--, but many new directories and business use it as a base. The positive part of Dmoz not listing new business, is that they'll eventually die out, when the majority of their listed businesses don't exist. Then dmoz won't be important.
