Electronic books and their associated reading devices allow readers to carry hundreds or thousands of texts with them for easy reading in many environments. Many businesses sell these eBooks on subjects as varied as the contents of paper books. Non-fiction and fiction alike fill the eBook world with information from every corner of the globe. Savvy marketers must strive to place their books ahead of others, ranking higher on sales charts, and gain market share over their competitors for greater visibility and increased revenue.

  • Create an eye-catching cover for the eBook. A professional cover draws the eye and attracts readers even though the book will not sit on someone’s shelf. The author’s name and title should appear clearly and set apart from any images used on the cover. The book should remain recognizable even in a thumbnail size, typically displayed on monitors as the size of a postage stamp.
  • Replace existing sales copy with a blurb that entrances readers and makes them want to read more. Non-fiction publishers should focus the blurb on the benefits, what readers will gain from the book, instead of the nuts and bolts of the work’s content. Engage fans of fiction with a teaser blurb that draws them into the story and provides just enough information to introduce them to key questions from the work.
  • Send review copies to prominent genre and non-fiction review websites. The creators of these websites regularly accept and review works for their readership. Most online review locations offer a submissions page with information detailing their requirements for review. Many will even review books after print and provide an additional surge of interest for greater market share.
  • Hire professional freelance editors, artists and writers if the company’s staff lacks the skills or experience to accomplish this without outside assistance. Quality freelancers are worth their weight in gold when it comes to increasing the value of a work.
  • Never pay for a positive review or include “gimmicky” gifts with review copies. These will likely draw the ire of readers and reviewers alike when discovered. Many savvy readers and reviewers will check multiple sites for review before coming to a decision, copy/paste versions of a single review may decrease the likelihood of purchase.
