Why branding is important for small internet businesses

Thank author of this post/comment

Branding is now more important than ever because of the proliferation of diverse social media and the ability of potential customers to access your product. Once customers are interested, they click, bookmark and forward your information to others. Your brand will be seen in many places and formats and that’s why it’s essential to have a consistent message that’s easily recognizable and readable. More importantly, a consistent and recognizable brand helps grow your company and become permanent within the marketplace.

When designing or choosing a logo keep in mind you will be using it in print and online. Choose colors that you like but that represent your product or company feel. If your product is a specific color use that in your design. Keeping the design clean and simple will help with brand recognition. Be sure that your design will reproduce well in small and large formats. Use Adobe Illustrator and create it in a vector format so it is scalable.

If you don't have Adobe Illustrator hire a designer who does. Paying a good designer for this will be well worth the cost. Make sure they know that you want a corporate branding package when you start working with them. This will tell them they are designing for multiple uses. Most designers will give you 2 or 3 choices to work from. Try to give them a good idea of your product or corporate culture. That way they will be able to give you the best possible choices initially. Ask them to design a black and white version also. You may find occasions when this will be needed such as in the newspaper.

Along with a logo image you will want to create a marketing tag or slogan. This statement should be about what makes you different from competitors with similar products. Why should someone select your product instead of theirs? What differentiates you from the rest of your competitors? What do you do better? What can you or your product do to improve or simplify your customer’s life? Consider your answers to these questions and create a concise slogan to be used in your marketing. Recall some familiar slogans that you hear or see every day. Try to make your slogan as descriptive and as memorable as those. The best ones are short, relevant and clever. When you have written a few sample slogans, test them out on friends and neighbors. Ask them what they think of when they hear your slogans. When you have a slogan that best represents your brand, include it in your overall logo design. Ask your designer to create designs with and without the slogan.

Now that you have a creative brand and slogan your product is ready to be unleashed on customers across the world?

Thank author of this post/commentbranding~~When you establish a brand perception that is emotionally stimulating in a positive way, you have a very powerful advantage. You don’t have to compete on price, and assuming your product is at least adequate in quality, you will make more sales, even more sales than better products because you have a stronger brand.

Thank author of this post/commentKeeping your brand current~~I also believe that with so many new social platforms keeping your brand up to date is extremely important. For example you can create an app, QR code and numerous profiles across all the social networks now. Having an instantly recognisable logo can help with this too, allowing people to recognise your brand and having a presence on whatever platform they use.

Thank author of this post/commentAttention~~You have to get someone's attention first. After that your branding can be positive or negative depending on the person's experience.

I once bought a small appliance around US$25 and it was broken out of the box. The store would replace it but not without running around to a different store. So I simply left it there and walked out. The store personally was simply stunned.

I bought a different brand at a different store. And the emailed the CEO of the company which eventually resulting in them replacing the unit.

However, since that happened 5 or 6 years ago, I've purchased thousands of dollars worth the kinds of stuff they manufacture. Less than US$100 of it from that company.

In my mind if their brand had a issues with a US$25 and a hassle getting it replaced, I'm not going to give them a chance on a US$300 or US$1200 item.

Thank author of this post/commentQR Codes~~One very important thing to keep in mind is that QR Codes live FOREVER! Once you print a QR code on a box, in an advertisement or any other place people will read it for many years, if not decades to come!

Do you have a QR Code linking plan in place. I think the following are very bad ideas:

- Tiny URLs

- Facebook, Twitter and other social websites

The reason is quite simple. How long will a certain tiny url service be around? What if some bad customers or bad uses, put their whole service and database at risk? What if they simply go out of business?

Facebook, Twitter, etc. All of the above are possibilities, but more likely could be a restructuring of the site which invalidates the urls in your QR codes.

It would be best to develop a QR linking plan and setup a kind of tiny url scheme in your own domain. ie: qr.domain.com/1 . The specifics aren't important as long as you are able to keep it 100% under your control.

Interestingly, I printed a QR code for my facebook page (yeah, I violated my own suggestions above) on my personal business cards. So far no one has even asked what it was for. I guess they figure it is just a design.

The competitors have the little guy with the hammer on their card. I dont want to just use a picture of a roof. The company name is "Marcus Anthony Construction LLC". Anthony is the 7 year old who is my personal boss....

Thank author of this post/commentBranding is kinda the same as social media~~for small online companies, creating a brand is kinda the same as managing your social presence. I mean, they are most likely to be the current customer (or potential future customers). So manage your social media carefully and diligently can pay off in the long run in your brand presence. Easily said then done, of course! But you gotta do it to create a brand these days!
