The key to a successful blog: engagement

Thank author of this post/comment

If you have your own blog and are frustrated with less than stellar results when you look at your bank account, you might be making some simple mistakes that are easily fixed. Blogging is not just about expressing your online thoughts. It's also about engaging the reader and knowing the questions that they have that you can answer. Here are three mistakes that you might be making on your blog:

  • Not being consistent: If you are not posting on a consistent basis, your readers will not know what to expect from you. You must develop a plan of action on when you will post content and do it on a routine. Maybe you need to start each morning by writing a blog post to get it out of the way for the day. Maybe you want to take one day each week where you spend several hours crafting new blog posts for the week. You can always schedule them out so that they are automatically posting for you. By being consistent, your readers will return time and time again to see what you have posted for the day. This helps to develop a loyal following on your blog.
  • Not showing your voice and personality: Don't be bland! Show your personality. When you have a certain tone and character in your writing (and videos, if you do them), the right target market will find you. You will begin to attrack the people that you want to speak to. After all, blogging is about reaching your desired audience. So, don't be afraid to be yourself. Don't just say what you think others want to hear. Don't just go with the status quo. Instead, show yourself, flaws and all.
  • Not monetizing correctly: Why is it that some bloggers are afraid to monetize their sites? If your reason for blogging is to earn an income, then you must monetize. How can you do it? There are numerous ways including Google Adsense ads, affiliate banners and links, and even creating your own products or services. One way to monetize without feeling "salesy" is by building your own email list. Then you can sell to these people over and over while educating them and building rapport.

If you are making any of these major blogging mistakes, they are easy to fix. Once you start doing these things correctly, your blog will likely become more popular, higher ranked on Google and more profitable in the process.

Thank author of this post/commentConsistency and Conflict~~Almost everyone I speak to about blogging echoes your point about consistency.

With regards to your other point about sharing your voice and opinions I find this challenging to do at times as it can often create conflict, although a good natured debate can be great for exposure and signify you are writing about a topic that people are passionate about.

Thank author of this post/commentConflict~~What is wrong with that kind of conflict? Must everyone hold equal viewpoints? Can't anyone accept that another will have a conflicting view?

Do you watch TV or the movies? It seems that all the programs and movies are successful because they create conflict. The most conflict the more success.

I think the key in expressing one's opinion, or "arguing" with another over their opinions is to focus on the ideas, not the person.

For example, if person A says, "I think X is a good idea". You could respond:

"Boy you are a big fat idiot if you think X is a good idea." Now, that would create a bad conflict and not help anyone.

Or, you could say, "I think that X is a bad idea, because..." and enumerate your various arguments against the idea. Now, that could result in some vigorous yet beneficial debate between the parties and everyone reading.

It might even result in the development of an even better idea(s).

I think far too much stuff published on the web is simply, bland, uninformative, boring and useless. How's that for an opinion?
