Name of your website?Clearing House for the LITTLE surname
Your name?
Nell Little Thibodeaux
Your Location (city, etc)
Hazlehurst, MS
What inspired you to launch your own website?
After compiling a genealogical cemetery survey book for my use, felt it would possibly be useful to other researchers. The court house in Simpson Co., MS was burned twice so the cemeteries are the only source sometimes. So, launching my own website seemed the way to go to get this information to other genealogical researchers.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
This genealogical website was my first one, launched in 1994 and the current one is in its fourth revision
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I knew that I wanted the name descriptive of the content and that I wanted all LITTLES everywhere to be able to post their lines also.
Please give us a short summary of your website?
A genealogical clearing house for the LITTLE surname that includes a searchable Simpson County, MS Cemetery Book; Mississippi, South Carolina and Georgia research Sources for LITTLE surname; a database of LITTLE surnames, and related lines of the Mississippi Littles, Barlows, Watkins, Smith, Bush, Lusk, Collins, Mullen, Steen, Byrd, and many more; and listings of Littles everywhere.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
It is different in content because I upload any LITTLE surname and the request for information and because I include a cemetery databse on the site, as well as a journal of Robert Little kept between 1804 and 1850.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
The only goal I have for this website is to keep it updated, providing free information to anyone. I would like to provide in the future more links to other genealogy sites.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
The success of the web site is infinitely more important than the time and money.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would possibly get a professional web site designer to redesign the site, using the same content. I designed this one and am sure it could be more professional.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes, as I am not selling anything. Would have to improve my updating skills.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
None.
What has been your biggest challenge?
initially, the challenge was to get a format that I felt worked in ease of locating all the information.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Search engines have probably been the best promotion, and posting in genealogical forums.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
I had no expectations, therefore no problems in that area.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
The site (or one like it) has been up since 1994 and will continue as long as I am physically able to keep it going and then hopefully, my daughter or another Little reseacher will continue it in perpetuity.
Replace this with a question of your own
I don't have a question, but do have a comment. I think there should be a way for search engines to distinguish between profit and non-profit sites, thus allowing the competition between like type sites.
