Can you please tell me the procedures necessary for a Ghana resident to visit the USA? I know that a passport and visa are required. Do they require a letter of invitation? Do they have to have an existing bank account showing that they have money to care for them while they are here? If so, how much money needs to be in the account?

Hi Dinah,

Is the person from Ghana looking to get a permanent visa to live here in the US or are they just coming to visit and then returning to Ghana?

• For a holiday or temporary visit they need a a non-immigrant visa, the fee to apply for this is US$131 and it must be done in the US Embassy in Accra, Ghana.
• If they wish to live permanently in the US they have to apply for an immigrant visa. This application costs US$355 and this application should also be made to the US Embassy in Accra. These fees are non-refundable, if you are not granted a visa these will not be returned.

In order to visit the United States the citizen of Ghana must provide a legitimate reason for wanting to enter the US, be able to prove that the total cost of the trip is affordable for them and in-line with their own income. They will also be asked to show their financial, social and family commitments in Ghana so as to prove that they will return and do not intend to stay permanently in the US. This can be done by showing proof of a secure job that requires their return, showing family commitments with marriage certificates or birth certificates of their children in Ghana etc.

If the Ghanaian citizen wishes to live or work in the US they must apply for an immigrant visa. Once this application is made at the US Embassy in Accra they will be contacted by the National Visa Center and given an appointment to participate in an interview to determine if they will be granted a visa.

I believe it is very difficult to gain an immigrant visa to the USA, especially from African countries. You have to provide much more than money in a bank account. Things may be easier for a temporary visa.
